In 1922 on Peoria's South Side, a group of women formed the
"Colored Women's Aid Club" to save area youth from the dangers of the streets.
Seventy five years later, the George Washington Carver Community Center continues to
provide a variety of programs for people of all ages - proactive programs that improve
quality of life and self-sufficiency by teaching living skills, social awareness, mental
and physical well-being.
| "Carver
Center gave me the incentive to be what 'society' said I could not be." |
-Charlotte
Lewis, Silver Medallist Montreal '76 |
The results are apparent. People who have passed
through our doors have gone on to become community leaders, role models and contributing
citizens. The goal of our proactive approach is aimed at reducing the cost of public and
privately-funded, reactive organizations.
| "Carver was there for
me as a child. I credit Carver Center for my social consciousness and community
involvement." |
-Eric
Turner, Peoria City Council |
Ongoing community support from businesses, civic
organizations and individuals is needed to fund necessary building repairs and
renovations. Carver has embarked upon a $1.7 million capital campaign. Your contribution
will help to update and expand classrooms, improve safety and appearance.
| "There is a great
need for a community center like Carver. Kids need a place to go and find themselves to
gain self esteem to become productive citizens." |
-Danny
Goodwin, Director & President, Atlanta Braves Foundation |
