CARVER
CENTER PROGRAMS
The variety of activities at the Carver Center are designed to
draw out the gifts and abilities of inner-city children and provide them with
encouragement and opportunities they might otherwise lack.
COMPUTER TRAINING

The Carver Center was the first in Peoria to teach pre-schoolers
computer basics. This program has expanded to include a computer lab used by students of
all grades through high school and is available for senior citizens interested in becoming
computer literate.

DAY CARE

Our day care program is geared to the income of working and
student mothers. Pre-schoolers receive good daily nutrition and are taught basic living
skills such as cleaning and cooking; as well as early mechanical skills, beginning math,
music and art. Education empowers people to overcome poverty, so our programs emphasize
education as well as recreational activities.

SPORTS

Sports has a strong appeal for all ages. The Carver Center
offers a year-round program of organized sports - building physical skills, discipline and
teamwork. However, during the school year before any child can go to the gym to play, they
must complete an hour of tutoring on subjects including English, History and Math; as well
as a nutritional program sponsored by the University of Illinois. Some of the more popular
sports activities held at Carver Center include basketball tournaments and boxing classes.

ELECTRONICS
An electronics class teaches students basic wiring as circuitry.
Once our 10-week course is completed, students can be certified to enter union
apprenticeships or are provided tuition, books and fees for further training at Illinois
Central College.

DRAMA

Carver's Drama Center exposes young people to drama and music,
giving them an opportunity to perform before an audience in one of the many concerts,
plays and choral performances given every year.

SENIORS

Active parent and senior groups meet regularly at the Center for
discussion and networking, or to plan field trips and hold Bible studies. Seniors are
offered computer classes as well as physical conditioning classes through joint programs
with Illinois Central College, the YMCA and the Department of Aging.

The Carver Center has a strong alliance with educational
providers in the area who contribute excellent instruction and curriculum. Our programs
and instructors also reach into the community by working with other social agencies and
providing classes. For example, Christmas baskets and toys are distributed to area
families in conjunction with the Marine Corps Reserve and the United Way. Every Sunday,
Catholic Worker House uses Carver Center's kitchen in order to prepare food for nearly 100
homeless. There is no charge to Catholic Worker House or the homeless for this service.
These are only a few of the programs that the Carver Center
offers. Many other activities and programs take place in this haven on Peoria's South
Side. We believe that the work done here must continue and expand to meet new challenges
in our changing world. But we can't do it without your help.
